Abdullah Gül was born in Develi, Kayseri, on 30 September 1942. His mother, Hafize Hanım, was a teacher and his father, Ahmet Necdet Gül, had fought at Taksim Square in the 1926 that marked the end of the Ottoman Empire. His father later became a general in the Turkish Army that abolished the sultanate in an act of parliament.
