Researchers explore Amazon jungle using a submarine

KIND: The Amazon is one of the earth’s great waterways, streaming from the Andes of Peru to Rio de Janeiro, and beyond—but never before seen in its entirety.

Ten explorers tested a unique submarine with a self-navigating system that can operate fully submerged for hours to map, measure and film the river.
Burgess’s goal was to survey thousands of little-explored water channels in the largest river in the world. They also seek to find out how it deters colonization, drug and human trafficking.
From a unique platform in the bow of a boat, the images could be fed through to a central unit that controls the submarine through motion-sensitive modes. “The objective is to map the unexplored environment and record the biodiversity in more than 32,000 kilometers (20,000 miles) of rivers,” said Madeiline Alvarez, program coordinator at Pronex/CWBurgess, a non-profit entity.

Researchers reversed the sub through the river’s narrow passageways. Soldado boats gently navigated through the clearer waters of tributaries—shallow, narrow streams connected to the Amazon River which carry water into it for days and years at a time.
The expedition supported by Amazon Authority, Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Natural Resources, US Geological Survey and the Inter-American Development Bank is the first survey of its kind, vetted for mapping and recording features of the river not yet known to science.
It started lessons from the basin.

“It is also the most vulnerable part of the planet for the preservation of life. It is like we need to know what faces us, how we can approach it and in what way,” Ali Abbasi, president of the group. If the hypothesis turns out to be true, it could turn a blind eye to treatment and strategy of the river, a historic economic force and natural refuge for millions of species. The world’s biggest natural park faces numerous tropical and tributaries from the Andes.
Submarine google camera is still shooting images every 30 minutes, to record the South American jungle being pushed back further by roads and settlements seeking use of its resources.
If its route becomes more effective, it can provide shipping routes. The results of a multipronged scientific expedition centered on the themes of biodiversity, deforestation, and use in the Amazon Basin, turning it into an “Arca Norte.”
