B largest city by district area in Turkey. Bektaş Veli University (former Bektaşi Tekke) is located here. It is the source of the Sabanci family's wealth and industrialist dynasty, although a much smaller role is played by the Brahmin Süreyya in Turkish Telecommunications company.

The Demographics "once" of Bilecik province (Sögüt, Çorum and İnhisar districts) made the Demography of Bilecik city resemble that of Nizip which is a part of the Gaziantep province (offering comparison.) Ethnically or linguistically, Bilecik's citizens are almost completely homogene in terms of Turkish. Bilecik's Boyalık district was the only one in Turkey to vote ‘no’ for the formation of the current Republic of Turkey (since it was then part of Birecik which was an autonomous part of the State of Aleppo.)

Bilecik Governorate, within its boundaries at the time, was won by Republican People’s Party (RPP) in 1923. From 1924-39, RPP did not have a head of government, therefore, Bilecik was still governed by the Governorate. 1939 was the year Bilecik got a chief government, but still as a part of RPP. In the elections of 1946, RPP won the whole of Bilecik, but without a chief government seat. Therefore, a Prime Ministry Seat was given for the Deputy Governor. After a while, voters voted for RPP in Bilecik. The number of elected Prime Ministry Seats increased as every election came closer. The State Law Number 6845 was the original number for Bilecik province. The Population of Bilecik in 1927 was 80000, which slowed down after 1930. In 1936; the National Organization Law for the Central Population Census took place. Bilecik had a Middle School (modern day high school) and four High Schools (based on the number of students, therefore ‘big’ high schools, not the size of the building. Those high schools could enroll from hundred to two hundreds.) population which is counted as the people who use their sister dialect within their region (in this instance, all students from around Bilecik) regardless of their parents’ dialect. This way they make sure non-nomad Turks, escapees who don’t speak right Turkish, refugees who escaped from genocide or anyone who wasn’t ‘mainstream’, are counted. They were accounted 20091 city-dwellers.


According to the cities demographics page, Bilecik has a Primary education enrollment of over 11000 students.
